I've been prepping my holiday gift list, because, as you know, I am an anal retent. Then my friend posted the pic below, and I knew it was time to do this list that I've been toying with for a while - My favorite local businesses. Instead of being disappointed that this has a local flavor, I challenge you to keep this going by commenting where you live and what your favorite shop is in that area. Hoping this week's Deep Thoughts Thursday with The Boozy Weathergirl helps well-deserving small business owners have a fantastic, fruitful holiday season! (Click on company names for links to their sites)
1
Gina's Nails - Spa-like serenity with tons of colors, friendly service and the occasional glass of wine to boot. Massage and hair removal services too! And the BEST name ever - LOL!
2
Respond If You Please/Storeybook Cakes/Southbury Baking Company - If you are planning an occasion that requires style, class and any sort of paper goods, please stop by The Heritage Hotel and check out Heather's boutique. She works closely with another fantastic friend, Lynn Storey, who creates wedding cakes and pastries so exquisite, I can't even begin to explain their beauty. And if it's a birthday or celebration other than a wedding, check out Southbury Baking Company for cute confections.
3
Sonny's Grinders - This family has been part of my life since Morgan's grade school years. I've watched them works their a**es off for years, then finally open their own place right here in town. Sonny's unique Asian-fusion cuisine is to die for, and they're just damn good people to boot.
4
Ayla's Bagels - I love me some bagels and cream cheese, as well as good coffee. It's all here. There's also great pastries, sandwiches, service and atmosphere. If you can't get your bagels in the city, try the next best thing down the street.
5
Woodbury Brewing Company/Connected Arts, Inc. - Beer. Beer makes me happy. I could spend a day listing all the breweries I love in CT. But what WBC does right is that it serves you alcohol AND brings you great music several nights a week to boot. A lot of this magic is accredited to my buddy TJ, who manages the ins and outs of the talent. He also hosts a bunch of house concerts (there's one tonight!) with some amazing artists. Check out both links to quench all kinds of thirsts in your life.
6
Newbury Place - Fellow Gettysburg College grad, Lynne Perry, and her husband scooped this little shop up right before COVID. Did that stop them? No! They hired people who would shop for you and leave the stuff outside. Now that that's past us, they continue to employee many high schoolers and some of the most helpful ladies I know in this town. Unique. quality gifts that you can afford. As well as a constant support of local organizations through sip and shop nights and other fundraisers.
7
Laurel Diner - You better get there early, because seating is limited. But boy, oh boy, is the food worth the wait. Another family I met during my Gainfield Elementary days, the Homicks are great people who can make a mean breakfast!
8
The Farm/Woodbury Floral Designs - Several jobs and personal endeavors I've had need flowers. Woodbury Floral comes through for me every time. I describe a look and a price range, and voila, I've got what I want. The husband/wife duo also own The Farm, which has fun for the whole family - and some amazing fresh produce and treats.
9
Miranda's Pizza (203-262-6400)/Julios Wood Fired Pizza and Grill - Now, I may be partial to Miranda's because they employ my beautiful daughter, but no one has ever argued that their food is not delicious. I was eating there long before Morgan was of age to work. Ellie and the gang bend over backwards to help me plate a PTO luncheon, give me a gift card donation or pretend I made meatballs for my family. Same with Julios. Another Gainfield family who, since taking ownership, has helped to support so many local causes and sports teams.
10
Rustic Charm - Obviously, Gainfield Elementary School was my dream place to start my life in Southbury, because over half of these businesses stem from those relationships. Charlotte, who owns Rustic Charm, is just a light in this dark world. We share the same goofy sense of humor, and she highlights that with fun videos and overly creative ways of marketing (like daily live videos of shop offerings during COVID - genius!). Her husband, sons and a rainbow of other characters make this an enchanting place to shop.
I'm just going to keep going with some additional links here. And if I have forgotten anyone, please do not be offended. Just call me out and accept the free advertising by telling everyone your company name, business and a way to reach you!
