It's five o'clock somewhere

This weekend, we celebrate the labor movement in America. In fact, the US is so hellbent on getting people back into the workforce, they're paying us to stop collecting unemployment and get a job! Celebrating for me always involves music, so I am working less and playing more in a musical Deep Thoughts Thursday with The Boozy Weathergirl. (PS - click on the links to access the songs!)

1

Taking Care of Business - Bachman-Turner Overdrive - Now this song can start playing in your head from the time you sit on the throne in the AM, to the drive to work, to the actual work day. Basic theme - git 'er done!

2

Take this Job and Shove It - Johnny Paycheck - There is not one working person out there who has not had fantasies of singing this song to his/her/their boss. It's like saying "screw you" in a song!

3

9 to 5 - Dolly Parton - Any woman who has ever wanted to stick it to "the man" gets a charge as soon as she hears the first rift of this tune. Think of it as the Working Women's Lib theme song!

4

Five O'Clock World - The Vogues - Besides the yodeling in this one, it's a pretty deep message - I'm tradin' my time for the pay I get. Kinda depressing. Thank God the song is upbeat, and someone is squeezing the lead vocalist's balls to hit those high notes.

5

She Works Hard for the Money - Donna Summer - Oh, girl, you know you be workin' in a diner like Flo, just tryin' to make ends meet when you hear this song on the radio. Someone send a girl a sugar daddy, please!

6

Smoke Break - Carrie Underwood - If you're not fond of 80s pop, you get the same message of the kick-ass, hard-workin' mama in this country tune.

7

Workin' for a Livin' - Huey Lewis and The News - If 9 to 5 is the anthem of the working woman, this is most definitely the tribute to the blue collar workers of America, bustin' their butts just tryin' to make a buck.

8

Working for the Weekend - Loverboy - Let's be serious - this is all any of us are ever doing!

9

A Hard Day's Night - The Beatles - So, you get the pun in the title, right? Work your ass off all day, folks, then come home and git you some! We should all be so lucky. Cheers!

10

It's Five O'Clock Somewhere - Alan Jackson - Ah, the ballad I repeat in my head every time I open the top drawer of my desk and grab my flask. Keep in mind that five o'clock is always just around the corner, and live to get through another day!

My bonus track this week is Morning Train (9 to 5) by Sheena Easton, because I used to love to sing this song in the 80s. Hoping everyone who reads this is safe and secure in their employment. And even if the job you have isn't the dream, I hope it gives you enough to carry on. This weekend, enjoy this recipe that shouldn't make you work too hard at getting drunk!
